What we believe

We are Christians! We believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and our Saviour. We believe He is "the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6) and that "no one comes to the Father" (John 14:6) except by putting their personal faith in Him as Lord and Saviour. We want to put Jesus at the centre of our church, community, family and personal lives.

We are evangelical in what we believe and how we live out our faith. When someone puts their faith in Christ, we believe we should follow the pattern of the early New Testament church where believers were baptised in water as a sign of following Jesus.

Our church structure is based on a leadership group of deacons and final decisions being made by the members. We believe in the active involvement of as many of our church family as possible in the whole church life - not just the minister doing everything!

Kirkwall Baptist Church is a member of the Baptist Union of Scotland, a family of Baptist Churches with over 14,000 members in 176 churches. The Baptist Union of Scotland, is in turn, a member of the Evangelical Alliance.

We believe it is essential for us to relate our worship and beliefs to real situations and provide practical help and support for each other, so Sunday worship is complemented by a network of midweek small groups where we aim to apply Bible teaching and provide a network of practical support and encouragement. We also believe one of the fundamental jobs for followers of Jesus is to introduce other people to Him and to share the love and compassion of Christ with a needy world. For Kirkwall Baptist Church, this includes involvement with the following:

and a range of other organisations and individuals.

We hope you'll find us a friendly, family church with people of all ages and backgrounds, an informal, contemporary style and with preaching which aims to be relevant to faith in ordinary, daily life.
